Easter

Easter is a Christian holiday celebrated to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from his death three days after he was crucified and tortured on Good Friday. It falls in springtime and marks the end of the Lent season. One of the most important and holiest holidays in the Christian calendar, it is often associated with yummy chocolate bunnies, fabulous marshmallow chicks and brightly colored Easter eggs, that have been borrowed from the pagan customs and traditions associated with a similar festival. Lenten season is actually forty-six-days long starting from Ash Wednesday and ending with Easter, out of which six Sundays are not considered to be a part of Lent. Thus, though fasts are observed in this season, Sundays are excluded from the fast period as they are considered to be a commemoration of Easter Sunday.

This season itself has a high religious significance as it is considered to be a period of atonement to prepare and purify oneself for Holy Easter. The last week of Lent is said to be the Holy Week and begins with the observance of Palm Sunday, which is so called because on this day, Jesus succeeded in entering Jerusalem, where the crowds who grandly greeted him by laying palms at his feet.
